Philly’s indie-rock powerhouse four-piece, The Districts, performed to a packed crowd last night at Union Transfer to celebrate their final stop on their Great American Painting tour.

Supported by fellow acts, Francis of Delirium, and Vanillaroma, the evening served as an energetic, fun, yet bittersweet close to their six-week run of shows across the coast.

The crowd began to slowly straggle in, as the members of Vanillaroma took the stage to kick off the evening. In stark contrast to their self-deprecating description of their group as, “a music band that plays semi-mediocre rock and roll,” the members of Vanillaroma were anything but. Quirky, fuzz-filled tracks like “Leave Me Be” and “Check Your Optimism,” quickly had the growing crowd dancing and nodding along, and at one point, the band even gave some quick kudos to their family members and brought them on stage for a last-song dance.

Following Vanillaroma was the Luxemburg-based trio, Francis of Delirium, consisting of vocalist/lead guitarist, Jana Bahrich, drummer/producer Chris Hewett, and the most recent addition to the band, bassist, Jeff Hennico. Bahrich greeted the crowd with warm enthusiasm, as she set up to play, and filled in the time between songs with funny quips about her experience with food in Philly and how it was okay if no one in the crowd knew where Luxemburg actually was. The trio captivated the crowd’s eyes and ears with stunning renditions of their singles like “Let it All Go,” jump-worthy “Quit F—ing Around,” and the solemn, “I think I’m Losing,” which featured The Districts‘ lead vocalist, Rob Grote.

The venue room amplified with excited cheers once The Districts‘ crew stepped on board. Grote is quick to grab the microphone and thank the crowd for coming out that evening, and the band begins playing their opening song. There wasn’t a minute that the crowd wasn’t jumping or singing the words along to favorites such as “No Blood,” and “Do It Over.” The same whimsical vibes were portrayed heavily throughout the Great American Painting tour and translated perfectly into their final live performance in their hometown.

Philadelphia’s Ceramic Animal shines in debut SXSW performance https://thatmusicmag.com/philadelphias-ceramic-animal-shines-in-debut-sxsw-performance/ https://thatmusicmag.com/philadelphias-ceramic-animal-shines-in-debut-sxsw-performance/#respond Mon, 21 Mar 2022 15:30:39 +0000 http://thatmusicmag.com/?p=65859 Written by Matt Salter

We caught Ceramic Animal‘s March 18th show at the Radio Day Stage in Austin, TX with open minds and no expectations. Ceramic Animal has been on the scene a while, and we’ve heard a decent amount of their work here and there, but this would be the first chance I’ve had the chance to give them the undivided attention they deserved.

On cueing up the VOD, we had some early concerns. Up against a hard timeslot – of every hour on the clock, 2:30 pm might be the least inclined to party. Ceramic Animal didn’t grab us, to begin with, just mid-tempo nod-along with not much low end, a little bit of twang, and some lyrics about heartbreak. Nothing wrong with any of those elements as such, but Austin’s leading export is slim young men with guitars and relationship issues. We’d heard this before.

Then, the first track from the new album dropped. “Sweet Unknown” is a quantum leap for Ceramic Animal. The Pennsylvania outfit dug into their roots and came out with gold: they had Bakersfield melodies playing nice with lyrics like early Elvis Costello, then transitioned into fuzzy keyboard-driven swamp stomp. Every track was different and everything worked. The ballads in particular hit sweet and had the crowd handled, no small achievement in Willie’s town.

In short, Ceramic Animal shone. “Sweet Unknown” dropped on March 4, and, while we don’t have a review copy yet, we’re hoping for a knockout. Ceramic Animal still has respect for where they came from, but they’ve leveled up their chops and added a whole new bag of tricks. An extended jam at the end summed up the whole show: give these boys room to work and they could be one of the best indie bands in the business.

PHNTMS Release Video For New Single “Body Language” https://thatmusicmag.com/phntms-release-video-for-new-single-body-language/ https://thatmusicmag.com/phntms-release-video-for-new-single-body-language/#respond Wed, 02 Mar 2022 14:00:32 +0000 http://thatmusicmag.com/?p=65421 Written by Nick Hopton

Philly-based LGBTQIA+ alternative band, PHNTMS, is back with yet another piece of musical bliss in the form of “Body Language.”

An alt-pop anthem, complete with shades of Paramore and U2, PHNTMS consistently finds ways to further their music while also staying true to their roots. The video tells the story of reading a partner’s actions rather than the words that they speak, while a colorful blast of both scenery and melody explodes from the band and onto our screens.

The trio is led by Alyssa Gambino, who has a voice that most can only dream of obtaining, effortlessly soaring into the heavens with her incredible range. Complete with incredible musicianship and creativity from Adam Jessamine and Mikal Smith, PHNTMS continues to push the boundaries of their own abilities while simultaneously pushing the boundaries of music as a whole.

Their upcoming Melrose EP (due for release this Spring), which is produced by Courtney Ballard (ATL, 5SOS), promises to be “full of vocal grit and unforgettable choruses spiked with just the right amount of emotional pull.”

Coheed and Cambria celebrate 20 years at Pappy & Harriet’s in Pioneertown, California last Thursday https://thatmusicmag.com/coheed-and-cambria-celebrate-20-years-at-pappy-harriets-in-pioneertown-california-last-thursday/ https://thatmusicmag.com/coheed-and-cambria-celebrate-20-years-at-pappy-harriets-in-pioneertown-california-last-thursday/#respond Thu, 24 Feb 2022 20:30:42 +0000 http://thatmusicmag.com/?p=65293

Coheed and Cambria came to Southern California to celebrate 20 years of gifting this world with genre-defying music based on the comics created by lead singer, Claudio Sanchez.

However, they did not come to Los Angeles, San Diego, or any other major city that has built a reputation for filling our souls with music. Coheed and Cambria decided they would play a sold-out show at Pappy & Harriet’s, a restaurant and music venue with an indoor and an outdoor stage, several outdoor bars and food stand for hot dogs and hamburgers, which sits on the edge of a very small town in the middle of the desert outside Palm Springs.

Pioneertown is exactly what it sounds like, originally built in 1946, as not just a set for western movies and television shows, but as an actual functional town where the cast and crew could live and play while filming. Today, in addition to remaining a functioning western livable filming set, it is a tourist attraction with almost daily western shows in the middle of Main Street. The fact that Coheed and Cambria decided to play in a venue like this made the show extraordinary and just plain fun.

To start the evening, the opening band was the Philadelphia-based band, Sheer Mag, with Tina Halladay (vocals), Hart Seely (bass), Matt Palmer (rhythm guitar/keyboard), Giacomo Zatti (drums), and Kyle Seely (lead guitar). Halladay owned the stage like no one I had ever seen before. The second she started singing all attention was on her and it was impossible to pull yourself away from the stage as she is a  remarkable combination of Janis Joplin, Stevie Nicks, Madonna, and Cyndi Lauper.

The lights went down and Coheed and Cambria, Claudio Sanchez (lead vocals, guitar), Zach Cooper (bass), Travis Stever (guitar), and Josh Eppard (drums), took the stage.

After happily standing in the freezing desert for hours, with absolutely zero cell service, and only the alcohol and hot dogs to keep us warm, we were more than ready for them, and the massive amount of hair that was about to fly around on stage. They opened with In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth: 3, which was quickly followed by You Got Spirit, Kid.

They continued to excite the audience with an expansive set that included a taste of their upcoming album, Vaxis-Act II: A Window Of The Waking Mind, a continuation of their Amory Wars storyline, with the song Shoulders.” Next came a three-song throwback to their first album, The Second Stage Turbine Blade, with Junesong Provision,” “Devil in Jersey City,” and “Everything Evil.”

The set was periodically interjected with stories of when they were first starting out 20 years ago, and no one understood what they were trying to do. However, now, they are overcome with gratitude to have such a loyal and wonderful following who embrace their eccentric artistic adventures, stories, and characters, and are willing to drive to the middle of nowhere for a chance to become a part of the fantasy world that they have created.

As the night went on, each song was greeted with more excitement than the last, playing fan favorites like A Favor House Atlantic” and The Suffering.” The smog on stage intensified as the lights and lasers glowed through, creating the illusion of being inside one of their pieces of sci-fi artwork.

Then came the finale. If you could only make it for two songs, these were the songs to show up for. The first encore was The Liars Club,” another insanely mind-blowing taste from their upcoming tenth studio album, Vaxis-Act II. Last, but not least, came the song. The song introduced Coheed and Cambria to millions of people, myself included. The song that made me fall in love with them and jump at the chance to drive three hours each way just to see them, Welcome Home.”

The Philadelphia-based rock band, SORAIA, has released a new cover of The Knacks’ song, “My Sharona,” a follow-up to their 2021 single, “Tight-Lipped,” which cracked the Billboard charts all the way to number 23 and gained support from commercial rock stations, including WMMR (Philadelphia), WRIF (Detroit), WRAT (New Jersey), WDHA (New Jersey), KCAL (Southern California), KFMA (Tucson, AZ), WWSK (Long Island, NY), and SiriusXM’s Underground Garage station, among others.

Vocalist ZouZou Mansour says, “We were going to tour Sweden for the first time in October 2021, and I wanted to record something fun with a Swedish producer. I was driving along listening to a playlist, and I heard The Knack’s ‘My Sharona” pop on. I loved singing it and felt energized with a kind of fire, so that was the obvious choice for me! The band was down to do it, so we had Sulo Karlsson produce the track the night before going in and banging it ooout in one day in the studio. It was fast, fun, and easy!”

‘Digital Bonfire Remixed’ Album Artwork

Written by Teyquil Skelton

It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon, and the weather was not the greatest in the slightest bit. However, what was great about that day was getting a chance to speak with Philly’s own lovely music couple, Adam Laub and Bailey Walker of DECOUPLR.

Before getting into the interview, I asked how their day was going, amid the messy weather outside our gloomy windows, in separate locations of Philadelphia. Laub mentioned that he was just working all day as if he isn’t a mastermind audio engineer and producer by night. Walker is the voice of silk sounds and soothing raindrops that co-exists beautifully with the creativity of instrumental bliss that only Laub creates. It shows clearly and in full force in this powerhouse remix album, ‘Digital Bonfire Remixed,’ which is absolutely genius on so many levels.

I asked Laub what his process was from a production standpoint, and he told me that he starts out with samples/drum samples almost like shopping, in a sense.

“I keep trying stuff out until I find what I like and from there, the process begins,” Laub explains.

Once he finds his footing, he gets rid of samples and has carved out a pathway to begin creating something entirely original for the current track he’s working on. Laub works in the “Reason software,” so I guess it’s safe to say that his headquarters for inventing all things digital are now in place and ready to breathe life into the empty structure of the track that lies before him.

Laub comes from a background where he usually just made hip-hop and trip-hop beats that were sample-based, but with this new album, Laub wanted to use as few samples as possible and be more original this time around and use real instruments.

I told the duo that their sound reminds me of the band, Portishead, from the 90s that I miss a lot. I continued my thoughts by expressing that their sound stirs mystery with a deeper meaning and how Walker coincides with what Laub creates musically. It’s such a beautiful thing to witness if you’re into that type of approach.

Walker talked about the juxtaposition that Portishead did well with and that’s combining hip-hop/trip-hop and electronic with Beth Gibbons’ vocals. I must say so myself, it was a magical time.

Walker says that she’s using the work that Portishead possessed as a way of inspiration while working from the digital framework giving soul and warmth to Laub’s production style. I asked Walker if she was the only arranger during the process and if there were anyone else working with them on this project.

“It’s only us working out the kinks of it, all while sharing in on the process together,” Walker explained.

As I switch back and forth with my questions, my follow-up landed on Laub and his thoughts on how he constructs his process with mixing. He mentions, the way he knows that a track is set and ready for mixing is when there is a stretch of good instrumentation across the frequency spectrum. He says whenever the audio hits your body with all that you’ve required in a track and it feels right, that’s when you know you got something.

Knowing that Walker and Laub are a couple, I was interested in discovering if there was something they were trying to convey through their music.

Laub mentions, “The original album ‘Digital Bonfire’ was written during the time of the pandemic and that the songs were written to let people know that it was okay to reach out if ever you were feeling alone or isolated. The ‘Digital Bonfire Remixed’ album was a follow-up in saying we did reach out and by that, they were speaking of other collaborators they wanted to work with musically but couldn’t because of a pandemic that held the world hostage for two years and still counting.”

I asked the duo then what was next for them. Are there any videos in the works, shows, other interviews, etc? Walker says that there are collaborations and that they’re on the ‘Digital Bonfire Remixed’ album.

As far as shows, the duo said that since it’s not 100% safe yet, gigs aren’t on the radar. However, they are looking to play in smaller venues that are outside in November. They’ve also begun working on their next album, but no timeline on when that will be released.

What is ready, is the ‘Digital Bonfire Remixed’ record that you can now purchase and checkout on all music streams and platforms. DECOUPLR brings the heat on this record and the flames are ablaze with each and every track displayed on this beautiful masterpiece.

‘A Dream About Love’ Album Artwork

Written by Lauren Rosier

The Philadelphia alt-prog/post-hardcore rock band, Circa Survive, release a brand new EP, A Dream About Love,’ out today via Rise Records. Additionally, alongside the EP, the band shared a visualizer for the track, “Sleep Well,” which features some really incredible time-lapse footage of the EP being created by the longtime collaborator, artist Esao Andrews.

Circa Survive has been a staple in the Philadelphia music scene for years now. With six full-length LPs and three EPs under their belt, they enter their 17th year together as a band and look to embark on a rescheduled tour (originally scheduled for 2020) to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their groundbreaking 2010 LP, Blue Sky Noise.

“We instantly went into scramble mode to figure out how to survive, no pun intended,” says guitarist and backing vocalist Colin Frangicetto. He flew home to Oregon at the start of the pandemic and has been mostly separated from his bandmates, Anthony Green (vocals), Brendan Eckstrom (lead guitar), Nick Beard (bass, backing vocals), and Steve Clifford (drums, percussion), throughout the majority of the pandemic.

I had been an original member of their first fan club, Creature Club, but since then the band has shifted to creating and sharing original content on Patreon. The band has been through a lot as, over the past three years or so, Green, still near Philadephia, has been struggling with his own personal survival. While he was tracking songs, he relapsed on heroin and overdosed. He entered rehab and after coming out, he began Narcotics Anonymous meetings daily.

In a press release, Green says, “When I was forced to be home, I didn’t get out of bed for months,” he says.

While the pandemic has caused some frustration, I feel it has also allowed us to reevaluate our lives, and determine what’s the most important to us.

The EP and single, produced by Will Yip (Turnstile, Quicksand, Turnover), are both sonic differences from their previous music, as the group continues to push their boundaries and grow beyond expectations.

Earlier this month, the five-piece unveiled the EP’s first single titled “Imposter Syndrome.” ‘A Dream About Love’ is the group’s first new project since 2017’s The Amulet, which debuted on the Billboard 200.

Circa Survive is set to perform at Chain Fest in Irvine, CA tomorrow, October, 23, following a 2022 North American headline tour. The tour begins January 7 and takes the band from West to East, with two SOLD OUT hometown shows in Philadelphia at Union Transfer.

Written by Lauren Rosier

The Philadelphia post-punk quartet, Full Bush, is releasing a new EP Movie Night, due out on December 3rd via Brutal Panda Records.

Of the track, the band said: ‘Movie Night’ is about what it feels like when people project their insecurities onto you instead of addressing their own shit.”

The EP was mixed, mastered, and produced by David Downham (Beach Slang, Low Do) at Gradwell House Recording in Haddon Heights, NJ.

From Full Bush:

“The EP is about change. Whether within ourselves or outside, the past few years have seen a major shift for us individually and as a band. We acknowledge the pain that was caused by our trauma responses, gaslighting assholes, or turbulent relationships. Sitting in and confronting the discomfort of necessary internal shifts and letting go of what doesn’t lift us up, support us, love us in all the beautiful, fucking flawed ways we are as humans. Movie Night is the endcap of self dialogue when you realize you have control and you aren’t dealing with bullshit anymore, you’re stomping on it.”

The four-piece have also collaborated with three artists [Marian Bailey, Theresa Baxter, Eva Martinez-Bond] on a special series of limited edition merch designs, which are currently available on their Bandcamp page. 100% of the proceeds will go towards Morris Home, Loveland Foundation, and The Innocence Project.

Full Bush commented more on this collaboration:

“During the height of the pandemic last year, we decided that whatever we do next,  we wanted to do something to help our community in a tangible way. We’ve always been tied to organizing/mutual aid as individuals but last year pushed us to want do something bigger, as a band.  So we had three amazing artists design shirts that 100% of the sales will be split among three organizations doing amazing work. Quarantine times might be over but we can only get through together by educating ourselves about each other, empathy, continuously challenging our patriarchal systems, and mobilization through mutual aid.”

Movie Night Tracklisting

01. Spooky
02. Sweet & Low
03. Movie Night
04. Wild Heart
05. One Second

The Philadelphia-based, indie rock band, Mo Lowda and the Humble, share their incredible new single, “Snowbird,” out today.

“Snowbird” is an excellent indie rock that features an infectious, looping electric guitar riff while touching upon subjects of seasonal depression and having the support needed to pull through it.

‘Snowbird’ was a fun one to work on,” frontman Jordan Caiola says. “Those driving acoustics that serves as the drive/backbone of the tune were one of the last things we added, oddly enough. The origin of the song was a simple voice memo from a few years back that really just had bass, drums, and that electric guitar riff, looping. Once we revisited it, the verses were written and that riff/hook finally had its place in the chorus. Lyrically, the song deals with themes of seasonal depression and having someone by your side to help you through it.”
